Hi all

Just found this rather useful page about getting cheap train fares in the UK - demystifies it a little bit:

Thanks for sharing. It doesn't demystify it as such...the trains ticket prices still don't make any sense but at least it tells you how to get tickets cheaper, its bizzare, "travelling short", I'm going to do this at some point just out of spite to National Rail and if the ticket collector whinges about me doing it then I'll just say I'll do the full journey.

Its ridiculous, I'm getting the train up to Bath from Horsham and the original price was something ridiculous which I couldn't easily afford, but now the two singles, combined with splitting the ticket has dropped the price significantly!

Thanks for that, Rob! :)

I'm wondering, how do they stop you from "travelling short"? Ticket inspectors on the train know if you travelled farther than what you paid for and can kick you off the train or slap you with a fine, but how do they know if you are getting off the train earlier?

They don't, unless you do or say something stupid. However, in many places you need to your ticket to leave the station, and in those situations you really don't have a leg to stand on.

Also, if you do it regularly, guards start to catch on - when they redrew the fare zones around London a few years ago, some regular travellers objected to their tickets being up to 50% more than to the next station (not unreasonably), and after it was obvious that a few 10gbp fines and warnings weren't going to stop it happening, the rail companies set up a few stings. At least a few got heavy fines, and i have a vague memory at least one repeat offender got a short jail sentance.

There are lots of good tricks out there, mostly legal ones, providing you have the time and energy and the nerdiness to work out exactly what your best options are and to play the system.
