Really bad slowdown of the main site in the last three hours

Travel Forums System Talk Really bad slowdown of the main site in the last three hours

I've been seeing the main site (forums, photo galleries, member profiles, etc) be atrociously slow for the last fifteen minutes. It takes 20-60 seconds to load a page (most of which seems to be waiting for the initial connection to be made).
The blogs load fine, so it's specific to the main application instance. Three hours ago everything was fine, as well. (Although that doesn't necessarily mean much, since of course the USA has woken up since then.)

Anyone else seeing this?

Seems to be back to normal again by now - maybe slightly slow still with making a connection, but otherwise not a problem.

I wasn't online about 3 hours ago, but it seems pretty normal now, although occasionally I'm hitting a page that seems 'stuck'. We are running a rather intensive process in the background at the moment and unfortunately it's just something we have to get through (improvements at the other end!!). We've limited how many threads this can take up at any given time though, so hopefully it shouldn't cause too much havoc, but if combined with say a big hit in traffic or a search bot going out of control, it could hurt a bit.

So, that's some background on the most likely reason for this. The benefit should really be worth it though

Still significantly slower for me, at any rate

EDIT: Forgot to say (then had another) that I've also had a few

"Server Error

The server encountered an internal error and was unable to complete your request.
JRun closed connection."

For the first time ever, which i guess is related

Yeah, I've been getting the same error, and they seem to be getting more frequent.

Hmm, okay, I'm stopping the background process to see if that helps....

The site seems pretty fast to me again; what is everyone else seeing?

Just hit another of those random JRun server errors. (Speed is still fine.)

The jrun instance was restarted a few hours ago. Do let us know if you hit any more of these. They are kind of frustrating as we aren't notified of them, which we generally are of other errors on the site.
