hi! Wanted to know your opinions on this one. I want to go to Europe next year in september. i want to go to england, holland, italy, greece, germany and croatia. the big question is: i can only budget for about $9000 AUS. Is this enough!? should i wait til i have more money? my friends are going in september which is why i wanted to go then. should i just say yes and try to just do the cheapest things possible? If yes, how far will $9000 get me? 3 weeks? 4 weeks? less? Opinions please!!
9000 AUD are roughly 5000 EUR. As a rule you need 50 EUR per day and person in Europe minimum, so theoretically you should be able to survive for about 100 days on this budget if your 9000 AUD do not include the flights, insurance and whatever else you might need.
However, if you are travelling with richer friends who insist upon going out or staying not in the cheapest, but the nicest hostels (or even hotels) you are screwed with a budget this tight. 50 EUR per day and person is usually just enough to pay for a hostel bed and buy some bread and cheese from the supermarket (so you don't have to go die of starvation or sleep on the sidewalk, but that is it). Especially the UK (England) is super-expensive, you'll need around 30 % more than you would in Germany or Greece.
If you want to party and see and do everything I would plan on having around 100 EUR (170 AUD) per day and person.
Talk to your friends and see how they envision the planned trip - digging food out of dumpsters, pitching a tent in the park, seeing all sights only from the outside and hitchhiking (anything to save money) or staying in 3- or 4- star hotels, riding first class in trains, eating out in restaurants, partying at night, etc and you'll be able to get a better idea of how much money you'll need.
BTW, have you looked into the Working Holiday Visa program?

5000Euro is in my opinion enough to have a really great time if you don´t spend too much time in London that is. Try and spend as much time in Croatia and Greece and you could stay for a year on that budget (well maybe not a year, but a half year at best)
As I´m constantly suggest on the forum if you check www.hostelbookers.com in advance you can really gauge what sort of prices you will be paying for accommodation and work it out from there.
www.seat61.com will give you the train timetables and prices for most destinations in Europe so that should help too.
Hope I was of some help.
all very useful advice. yes i have thought of a working holiday, and still am considering it!!
Yeah avoid London & your money will go so much further spend 1 day there seeing the sights & then head somewhere better value for your hard earned cash, The same rule also applies with Amsterdam,
