Forget awful films and lets hear some thoughts on good films..
I'd have to say back in the 80's the best film for me was "The Gonnies" . . . Childlike I know but I was a little nipper
Hows about True Romance with Christian Slater and that lush blonde girl (can't remember her name) Class film but then I do like abit of harsh romance! And am sorry if this isn't anyone's taste but anything with Al Pacino is ace
my favourite kiddie movies back from the 80's and 90's are:
Back to the future trilogy
Home Alone 1 and 2
thats all i can think of at the moment, im sure there are many many more!!
i will have to have a look ( I work at Blockbuster so im surrounded by movies)
i know i'm forgetting some good ones but of the top of my head, some of my fav. from the 90s would be . . .
pulp fiction , goodfellas, unforgiven, the usual suspects,
Miller's Crossing, dances with wolves, l.a. confidentail,
most people have seen these films , but here are 2 films you many not have seen . . .
Yi ge dou bu neng shao (not one less) directed by Yimou Zhang of "raise the red lantern" fame.
"All About My Mother" http://imdb.com/title/tt0185125/
watching these films gives you a look at other people in the world, on thier own terms, "not one less" is with out a doubt one of my favorite of the decade, and i highly recommend it.
What's with the UK and The Goonies? I loved that movie when it came out (my sister and I saw it 13 times, I think), but no one here remembers it anymore. When I went to Ireland and England in June, though, people were bringing it up everywhere I went. I even saw one girl with a Goonies t-shirt (wish I knew where she got it!).
Add to my list:
Stand by Me
The Princess Bride
The Breakfast Club
Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure
Back to the Future
Hmm... there must be more, but I'm wracking my brain to think of another. Anything with Corey Feldman or River Phoenix was on my list back then...
I liked the Goonies too... although I'm not from the UK!
My favorites from the 80s were The Indiana Jones trilogy, and Cinema Paradiso (although I didn't see it until years after it came out).
From the 90s though I have loads more that I liked and remember .
Only You (really minor movie with Robert Downey Jr. and Marisa Tomei)
The Usual Suspects
My Cousin Vinny
And I did see All About My Mother and i liked it as well. Just one thing I have to say about that movie though, to those who saw it, how devastatingly hot would Lola/Esteban have been had he/she remained a man? I mean his face was still that of a man's and you can see how gorgeous he used to be before the change. Oh well... That's one thing I noticed... too bad he is a woman now. Or was... anyway I liked the movie!
Nola, Zhang Yimou has done some pretty stellar films prior to his "Not One Less". "Life", "Judou" and "Raise the Red Lantern" are my picks.
Mine would probably be (in no particular order):
The Last of the Mohicans
My Left Foot
The Usual Suspects
Rouge (HK film, with Anita Mui & Leslie Cheung)
Farewell My Concubine
Scent of a Woman
More later, when I remember!
Ahhhh.....the not-quite-golden age of movies Great idea for a thread!
Here are my picks:
- Wayne's World (the first one...the second one was only good because Aerosmith was in it )
- Ace Venture: Pet Detective
- Breakfast Club
- Pretty Woman
- Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and every other Disney movie.
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (I was a kid, what can I say?)
I'm sure there are tons more, but it's hard to think of movies from way back when!
That would be Ace Ventura....hehehe, was typing too fast for my own good there!
oh i love: most of the above mentioned movies.
but also star wars
stand by me
full metal jacket
the boy who could fly (because i really thought if you wished it hard enough you could)
ahhh... there are so many.... cant think of all of em...
Though I'm sure to be missing lots, here's a few others haven't mentioned yet that top my list:
- The God's must be Crazy! (1980)
- La Haine "Hate" (1995)
- Trois Couleurs "Three Colours" (red, white, blue) (1993, 1994)
- The Thin Red Line (1998)
- La Vita e bella "Life is Beautiful" (1997) - Watch it !!!
Agreed on the Zhang Yimou pics as well -- looking forward to "Hero" coming out here soon
Undoubtedly missing many classics - I also agree with quite a few that others have mentioned as well.. Almodovar films rank highly in my books.
