If I was you, I would think about trying to find a way to keep your house. It's such a great security to have. You could rent it out while you travel, so that it would cover the mortgage(if you have one, and if you dont, well then the rent would generate extra travelling money for you).
It's just that to sell up your main asset (although tempting because of the amount of ready cash it would release for you) means that you could potentially return home from your travels in x years with nothing and have to start from scratch, which can be a little bit bleak.
However, if you are planning on leaving Canada for good to actually live somewhere else entirely, then I guess it could make sense to have all that cash to set up somewhere new.
My advice would be rent out your house for now and appoint someone back home to keep an eye on things for you, take te 10 grand from your car plus whatever you can save in the meantime and take off. Work as you travel....just bar jobs..whatever you can get..and try to live off what you earn, so that you can use your savings for the periods where you are actually on the move and travelling proper. Working can be one of the most fun experiences while you are away, and it's usually the best way to meet people and integrate into local culture. If you have 50,000 at your disposal you are less likely to do that, and it would be much easier to just live like a king, travel as much as possible, blow it all and find yourself suddenly heading back home in 2/3 yrs to start all over again.
If you can wait 6-12 months before heading off, save like crazy in the meantime, sell you car, then hit the road and be a smart traveller you can cover all the options and still have an amazing time. And, if you find somewhere other than Canada which has you written all over it and you never want to leave, THEN you can sell your place at home and free up all that money!!
That would be my advice. Congratulations on deciding to hit the road. You will have the most amazing time - I can guarantee it! Where are you planning on travelling to?
