Hello Fussy,
Greetings from Nepal...

First of all I am apologize if my words become sparm advertisement of tour but as I am member and experienced on related field i here by would like to mention some suggestions as mr.fussy asking for.

Well, generally doing the trek near kathmandu is to understand to know the local villages as well as green hills and nice view of eastern mountain.

So, you may go through this itinerary below:

Day 01: Drive by local bus or car from kathmandu to Sundarijal and trek up to Chisapani and overnight there.
Day 02: wake up and have break fast and head down to green valley(Shankhu) and all the way trek up to Nagarkot and overnght there.
Day 03: Trek down to Changunarayan and get the transportation either local bus or car back to kathmandu and one the way back you may visit Bhaktapur Durbar Squar.
cheers

You can do short treks around the Tibet border at Kodari with Borderlands or the Last Resort - both have offices in Thamel, and i think these are the more interesting shorter treks around the region. If you consider Pokhara close by, you can also try the Ghorepani or Pooh Hill treks from there, both will take around 3 days...
