I never travel alone. Never felt the need and never had to. Only once I had to fly alone to Paris but my friends were waiting for me there. So I guess it doesn't count!
I am afraid of travelling alone, especially in countries I don't speak the language...
If I did though, I'd definitely try to meet some people.

Cool Paul, this was a nice post. I too find it difficult to start a conversation. I just don't know how and I always fear the others will be annoyed!

Couchsurfing.com is a good way to meet people. You don't have to be staying on their couch or they on yours. You can arrange to meet up for a drink with the locals or attend some gathering or meetings that might be going on. Most cities and towns have monthly meet ups or some even weekly. Worth looking into.

As for travelling alone I haven't ever done it and I'm not sure I'd like it. For me it's all about the shared exprience and the laughter and banter with a friend. There are things that have happened on my travels that if I'd been alone I'd really not have enjoyed but being with a friend has made us both just laugh about it and look on the funny side. I'm not sure I could enjoy the solo travelling thing as much which is pretty sad but it's the truth. I wish I could be more independent.
