Cheapest ferry to Indonesia (from Malaysia)??? where?

My guide book and the actual price of the ferry to Medan from Penang is so different.
A local told me its cheaper to go to Melaka and take a ferry to Sumatra.

Guys, I really need to go cheap to make it to Borneo...

I out of time. I am tempted to take the KL train, coz its so cheap and then proceed to Melaka.

I just want to go to Jakarta and then proceed to Borneo.

How much is a bus from Jakarta to Bali?

When was your guide book published? Even if it was published this year, it's no surprise with the crazy increase in fuel prices.

He's probably right, as the distance is nearer compared to Penang - Medan.

Bus? Umm... you do know Jakarta is a separate island from Bali, don't you? You'll have to take a boat/ferry to cross from Java to Bali. Don't know about this one though...

Bali and Indonesia, There must be a bridge??? I thought I read it somewhere that a bridge exist.

1500 baht to go to Medan is hell expensive.
There is another crossing JOHOR BAHRU and Singapore to another Indonesian island that connects to Java.

A local told a ferry from peninsular malaysia exist. But he said it is very expensive. He also said it is cheaper to go to Medan from Melaka, than to travel from Penang, even if it closer. But I am not going to Medan then.

I really want to go home now. But I cant fly, coz I have an ear infection of some sort.

I could use more help... LIKE HOSTELS and stuff... all the hostels I stayed the whole time I was travelling, I only heard about them through the people I meet. I didn't have a guide book and hostel sites dont have the cheapest options.

Please give me some more ideas... I do want to make it Bali. But I can't afford to pay for more than 200 baht per night. I think in term of Baht.

From Johor Bahru you can get a ferry to Bintan or Batam in the Riau islands, and then on to Dumai in Sumatra. No idea about the current cost I'm afraid. Half of Bintan is taken up by expensive resorts, but the other half is actually quite interesting.

I'm pretty certain there's no bridge connecting Bali and Java.....

I just checked. There's no bridge, but there are (slow) buses from Java to Bali, using ferries to cross over.

That's probably either Batam or Bintan, which is full of resorts for Singaporean visitors.

A ferry from Peninsular Malaysia all the way to Java? Not that I'm aware of. If it's very expensive, it's probably a cruise ship, not a regular passenger ferry.

Hmm... define "cheap". Did you check out the accommodation section of this site? There are ratings, reviews and you can compare prices. A quick check shows that there is room for as low as USD8 (almost 300 baht) per night.

Sorry, just re-read your original post. Theoretically there is a ferry service from Tanjung Pinang (Bintan) to Pontiniak. I would try to find more detail before banking on it though.

I hope there is. I am in KL and the hostel is full. I am just using the net. Jakarta has no HOSTEL option, I'm checking hostelworld.com. I am only going there to get to BORNEO.

Dumai is the same entry point from Melaka? well that Bintan option sounds expensive... Resort island. even if I dont stay there.

How convenient is it to go to Jakarta from Dumai. I just paid VIP tickets for a shitty bus ride (Penang-KL), I am scared the bus station culture in Dumai is as chaotic.

Only half of Bintan is expensive resorts. The other half is not expensive at all, and the ferry to the non-expensive bit is not expensive either.

It's not particularly convenient to get to Jakarta from Dumai. You'd need to probably take two bus rides, then a ferry ride, then another bus.

If you ask me, you sound a bit confused. I would play it safe and fly. You can get an Air Asia flight from, for example, Johor Bahru to Kota Kinabalu for 130 ringgit, which is a lot less than you're going to end up paying attempting to get there overland.
