Inspired by the Mobile phones on flights thread in General Talk, but not wanting to threadjack it any further than it's already jacked, I'll continue over here...

Chayisun - cell phones have an off button for a reason. Mine is in a suspended state of OFF 24/7 unless I have things like the break lines dissolving in the parking lot of WalMart at Christmas or we're stuck in the Sears Tower during a torrential rainstorm during a TP meet-up in Chicago. Otherwise - people are pretty much "shit outa luck" getting hold of us by cell. We did rely on cell phone service only at one time....

Beerman: Since the landline phone service is absolutely abysmal, I have signed us up for 1 year's worth of cell service. Here is the phone and the number.
Me: Cool, this should be fun! How do we work this thing?
Beerman: Here is the booklet.

We now take time to read the booklet, input everything we're suppose to input, try to keep our excitement about moving into the 21st century at bay, and proceed to try and use the phone...

Beerman: I think I have a signal!
Me: Great - call someone!
Beerman: Nope - lost the signal. It's roaming for something.
Me: Roaming isn't bad - keep trying.
Beerman: Oooohh, the phone is ringing!
Beerman's Mom: Hell....
Beerman: Hello?? Hello??? Shit! I think we lost the signal.

At that point, Beerman's Mom tries calling on the landline which is no longer in service. It took several tries to get the message through to her that we had a new number and it was a cell phone...

This was our lot in life with the cell phone for 12 months. The only time we got a signal that lasted more than 30 seconds was by standing on the roof of the dining room and pointing the phone in a particular direction. Needless to say, that rarely worked. We became quite accustomed to not speaking with anyone via the phone, actually making life much more relaxed.

Needless to say, we reinstated our landline number which also has it's problems... One year the phone box across the road flooded and fried the circuits. The friendly phone man came out and connected our line to the neighbor's box about 1/4 mile down the road. That was 5 years ago. Since then, the cable has run above ground because there aren't enough residents out here to justify burying one line. Our phone line requires replacing (at least) twice a year. One is always during the worst winter imaginable because the mice eat through the wires buried by snow. It never fails to go out either in a blizzard or in -25F temperatures. It goes out again when the county mowers comes through and mow the ditches. Yes, they are aware of the cable but forget and mow a bit too high, cutting the wire in several places. We now take bets on when these 2 events will happen. The telephone linemen know us by name when we call for repair. We have given up requesting the burial of the line as they pay no attention to it anyway. We'll be buried before the cable is - hopefully Verizon will send flowers. I'm not even going to go into the lightning strike phone blow-outs that happen regularly...

As for the cell signals - we have one tower about a mile away and another about five miles away. They don't seem to want to reach our house. We live in a bit of a valley. If you want to break your addiction to your cell phone - come for a visit. It works. You won't get a call, SMS or anything else that may come through your phone. Basically "what you don't have, you don't need".

PS: It was fun watching Heather stand on one leg, touch her nose and still not get a signal. I haven't seen cell phone withdrawls that bad ever! We had to liquor her up just to keep her calm. Okay - the liquoring up was a given - it's Isa Manor, after all...

God bless Isa Manor, it's owners and it's visitors.

But most of all, God bless beerman's stash of booze.

Is this where I get to complain about people who answer their phone right in the middle of their conversation with you?

I was there first! The phone is not a summons!

I think it is very important to be able to have a cell phone with internet and have internet calling options.

I think it is also very important to call someone to say that you will be there in 2 minutes. He or she might be in shock otherwise to see my face all of a sudden.
