Gez,
No, I don't know the name of the BKK hostel. You do know that many times a film crew will build sets rather than use actual locations. All the interior scenes on the TV series 'Las Vegas' are shot on a set, in LA. Much easier to control the filming on a set than an actual casino. After leaving Martha's Vineyard one summer, I went to Gloucester, Mass. I had seen 'The Perfect Storm' and wanted to visit the locations shown in the film. The Crow's Nest is a real bar in Gloucester, but it does not have a view of the dock area. The film crew built a fake Crow's Nest' so the Bobby Shatford (Mark Walhberg) charactor could look out his window and see the Andrea Gail. Makes for a more dramatic storyline. It did not happen in the book or in reality. This is 'poetic license' when making a movie.

I do remember that Richard (DiCaprio) starts his swim to this 'undiscovered island beach' from Koh Phangan. Good choice, plenty of young traveller types around for extras and nice beach/bungalow/bar locations. The problem is that the 'lost island' is Koh Phi Phi Lee. Phangan is in the Gulf of Thailand and Phi PHi Lee is in the Adaman Sea. Quite a swim. 'The Beach' was made for a wide audience and to make money. It is not a documentary on Thailand beaches. I doubt the hostel exists, and if it does, it no longer looks like it did in the movie.

Hey Noel,

If your talking about the hostel in the film where that 'Daffy' guy kills himself, then its a hostel in Phuket town called On On Hotel. Ive stayed there on 2 occasions and the first time i didnt even know it was from the film until the guy i was with mentioned that it looked familiar. I was there last year and it still looks exactly the same, very grubby!
hope this helps

Davey is right, The Beach room scenes were shot at The On On Hotel in Phuket Town.

they said the beach was MAYA BAY in Krabi. (LEAFLET)

and someone told me its actually shot in THE PHILIPPINES, in EL NIDO, palawan.

I said no its in Thailand, Krabi, Maya Bay...

i have seen ON ON hotel... I didn't see any sign board stating that this is where they shot some scenes for the film, the beach.

I did a quick check and Maya Bay is one of the hidden bays on Phi Phi Lee.

oh!? So the whole enclosed beach island is in the Philippines?

Is there a travel package or tour to get to the island?
(I'm not planning to grow any kind of plant or anything )

but that beach was Amazing, it may be well worth the visit.

Perhaps you should read post #6 a bit more thoroughly. The movie; 'The Beach' was filmed in Thailand and the
'hidden beach' was filmed at Maya Bay on Koh Phi Phi Lee.

As previous posters have mentioned, the hostel in the film is not actually in Central Bangkok, it's in Phuket Town. It is indeed called the On-On Hotel. I've stayed there - it's an interesting place, if a bit run-down. It really is just as much of a rabbit warren as it appears to be in the film. I think it's worth spending a night there, as it is cheap and characterful, but stay in the old part of the building, not the boring concrete new wing, and ask to see the room first 'cause some of them are awful.

By the way, this photo and this photo are of Koh Phi Phi Leh, where the beach in The Beach was filmed - deffo not the Philippines! It's really easy to get to, you'll need to get to Koh Phi Phi (from Phuket or Krabi), then hire a boat for half a day to take you out there, or hitch a ride on a diving boat.

Mike, according the story all the events was on Koh Tao and Koh Phangan. But movie filmed on Phi-Phi, you are right.
A propos, the movie "A man with golden gun" was filmed in the Andana Sea too (Pha-Nga bay), while story take place in Halong bay (Vietnam).
