So I'm thinking about going to Costa Rica and traveling by bus through Panama and onto Ecuador.

Is this something that is pretty easy to do once I'm there or should I buy tickets ahead of time, etc?

No road through the Darien-you'll be flying from Panama City-fast and easy to do.

The flight from Panama City is very easy...Sam is right...A boat around the outside to Cartagena and the San Blas islands, is about the same price.....much much longer and on a sailboat most likely piloted by a savvy ex-pat and is very worth the time and effort.

I realize that this is some guy on the internet telling you to do something circumspect and non specific.....Buuuuutttt here we go.

Go to Colon, (If'n you are interested in this kind of deal) and ask around for the next boat leaving. Someone will hook you up on a sailboat that travels to and fro to Carta. They apparently have a blast.....

I have NEVER been on this trip...But I rented an apartment in Carta that was over a tourist hotel....I spent alot of time hearing stories about these great trips....I have seen (No Exaggeration!!!!)hundreds of photos of these trips, with nothing but gleeful faces...I have never heard a discouraging word

Back to my countryman Sam...He is right. You hit Panama City and you can fly to several cities toute suite for about two hun.
