Hi there
I'm thinking of travelling from Buenos Aires to Punta del Este for New Years. What is the best way to get there and what would the cost be? How soon should I book? If booking from outside the country what is the best way to do this?

You'll want to think about a number of things, mainly, that the public transportation between BA and Uruguay is by train or boat, both of which will likely be busy, so book your ticket a few weeks in advance. I can't speak to cost, but here's a rough idea of how to do it.

Take either the slow boat (cheaper) or the fast boat ($$$) from BA to Montevideo, it's called the Buquebus. You'l need to leave plenty of time on arrival because you'll have to do immigration/customs in Montevideo. Then take a bus to Punta del Este (4-5 hours). PdE will be expensive and booked, it's the Buenos Aires party place. Again, word to the wise, book in advance.

If you opt for the train/boat option, it goes from BA to a swampy suburb, and then you take a slow boat to a small town in Uruguay (don't recall the name) and then a longer bus trip to PdE.

Have to make a reservation as soon as possible, many people travel to Argentina at that time to Uruguay and Punta del Este.

Frankly reserves by ferry'm not sure you can make it through the Internet. But maybe if you make a reservation from an airline that arrives at the airport in Punta del Este "Laguna de Sauce."

Hi, Im from BA.
According to your plans, stay in Punta del Este to new years eve can be difficult if you don´t take time to make reservations.
Some tips:
Punta del Este is the most important beach place to spent vacations for all argentinians specially, but nowadays for brasilians and mexicans also, so the occupation is full al the time. Prices are higher than in Buenos Aires, quite higher.
I go almost every year for just one week and it cost me about USD 2000.
A hostel cost about USd 25 in a 8 people room with shared bathroom, a 3 stars Hotel cost USd 250. Don´t forget that the vacation season in Punta starts in december 20th as well as prices. If you make reservations you can find a Hotel or a Hostel, even an apartment for you only as temporary rent.
In you can get a flight ticket from Bs. As to Punta del Este, Buquebus is a cheaper option to travel and reservations are possible. Nowadays are another options besides Buquebus an cheaper than that. The trip cost aprox. USD 200.
Party is one of the most important things in Punta, there a lot of, specially private ones.
Car is another important thing to have, cause distances between downtown and the best beaches are far, so you can get taxi (expensive and diffucult to find) or rent a car.
If I can do anything to help you send me an email.
