I am 18 years old from NE England. My friend and I planned on taking a gap year to Oz and booked the flights and everything and then she dropped out:(

I decided I would still go on my own though.

I am flying to Adelaide for Nov/Dec because I have family, but then I want to move on to Sydney in Jan 09, and hopefully meet some people who will travel with me(because I don't like being on my own!!!)

Am applying for WHV, anyone with similar plans...going to be in Sydney at the same time?

To people who have done this before...will it be easy enough to make friends and find jobs/accomodation?

General feeling I get over at lonelt planet is that you will find it harder to find time to be on your own then the other way round

Hey,

well firstly well done on deciding to go it alone, it's something you definitely won't regret & something no doubt your friend will.....anyway's I arrived in Oz & also spent my 1st 2 weeks in Adelaide.......8 months down the line I haven't regretted a second of it, you will meet so so many people all with different plans. You will meet people who you'll stay in contact with, and some you'd rather never have met, but they're all part of the experience....Be sure to spend a good amount of time in Melbourne cause that's a great city but then equally so is Sydney either place accomodation will be easy to come by and due to the amount of people in the same situation as yourself you won't be on your own for very long.......;)

"I'm not a man as such" ? hopefully your one or the other, otherwise Thailand may be a better destination to head.....haha...Yeah you'll meet plenty of people in hostels like I said some of them you won't want to meet haha I've shared some rooms with some pretty strange people.......well the job 'sitch'....depends on how you wanna look at it, for me personally at the minute work is killing me (I have 2 jobs) so that goes to show they're easy to come by especially in Sydney, but I worked 76 hours last week and all I wanna do is go down the beach, but my time will come ;)

Quoting catspellma

you missed leeds fest tho!

aww don't remind me, I was looking through my mates pics of it the other day, gutted, that's 1 thing that you'll miss over here......decent music......they have the occasional decent band, (am off to see We Are Scientists end of the month) but as far as festivals go they have a lot to learn,

Well am currently just doing office work (easy to come by) @ an Insurance company through the day & a bank in the evening, have been working 8am-9.30pm every day for the past 5 weeks, but it'll pay for my trip to South America so I've gotta live with it.......I have this weekend off though, definitely gonna be hitting the beach! am sure you'll be doing the same back in the sunny UK haha ;)
