Can anyone recommend a book, which just lists all the hostels in Europe? Plus addresses and telephone numbers of them...and short reviews?

Also, can you get a map book of each of the major cities in Europe? Just the central bits, the ones you actually want to visit. I don't want to be lugging around a backpack full of maps!

Hi Sam,

I dunno about the hostel part, but for maps, each city usually has a tourism office gives out free maps. Perhaps you could just pick one up at each city you go to?

Any book of hostels is bound to be out of date at the time of printing. Online hostel listings are far more accurate and give great reviews as well. Many people are not aware of the fact that sites such as hostelworld (and even TP's listings) include non-hostels as well.

The Lonely Planet guides have maps of the central parts of cities and a small list of hostels and hotels. You might want to try that, but it's a pretty heavy book to carry around so I would reccommend the internet and a printer or the next tourist information in the city your in.

You're definitely not going to get an up to date hostel book. For hostels I recommend and

The hostels tend to get a fair review on there as people can only review via an email sent to them once they've booked and stayed in the hostel, it's not like the hostel owners can go on and make fake reviews. Only one hostel I've stayed in that I booked on these sites turned out to be not very nice and where my experience didn't match the other reviews.

These sites also have full addresses, directions and maps for each hostel.
