I am going to be traveling throughout South America, taking as much time as is necessary to savour as much as I can throughout 2009... after I spend New Year 2009 in Santos (Sao Paulo).
I have come across an issue in my plannings- that is the Carnival.
I really do want to go, however if it would create a loop in my travels and is likely to be one of the most costly ventures... so I am beginning to wonder whether I should go at all.
Has anyone been to the Rio Carnival before? is it worth going to?
Also, I heard that there are several different ones, so I am also confused as to which ones I should go to... in relation to my party threshold (especially "a la Latino") I think it would have to be no more than 4 days max!
ps: is anyone else going to the Carnival this year?
Rio carnival is worth going to see, I went to the carnival in 2007.
However, if you ask any Brazilian, they will tell you that the best carnival is in Bahia.
Although this carnival is completely different to Rio and I think you will enjoy your time whichever one you go to.
hope this helps
I'll be heading to the Rio festival in '09, can't wait....well I can, but only because I have so many more places to visit inbetween....but yeah I've heard about how expensive it can be, but then It's not something I'm going to get to do every year and so I'm willing to pay it....
Its true that it is not something i could do everyday, so it is probably worth going to. There is music on the streets! what could be better for a huge party?!
Thanks Edros for the info on Bahia, I have actually checked out several websites about Bahia and considering that I was going to be up in Salvador before the Carnival - i guess I will stay put there a little longer!
If you want info on Salvador in Bahia, check out this website: http://www.bahia-online.net/Carnival.htm
It is a really informative and amusing website!
I doubt every Brazilian will say the best Carnaval is in Bahia. Many, many Brazilians will say it's in Rio de Janeiro.
I have been to both and I much prefer Rio de Janeiro. More organized and overall better all around. I just hated stepping over drunks passed out in the street and the smell of urine in the air and vomit.
Hey Fast, do you mean the vomit and urine was more common in Salvador?
hmmm.... well you most certainly have shed new light on the matter! But I understand what you mean, living in Barcelona there are "fiestas" all the time - and now that I am living here, I do not find them all that much fun!
I guess it depends what you are looking for when traveling abroad.
Weighing all things out, I don't think I will be going to the Carnival - for practicality issues mainly (it conflicts too much with traveling schedules and budget!).
Thanks everyone for the feedback!
In case your travel plans change and you find that you dont make it to Rio for carnevale, there's no shortage of street parties happening there at any other time of the year - on a smaller scale, but they are really great.
Check out the Lapa Street Party - fantastic experience. Everyone just piles onto the streets, lots of food and drink, dancing with total strangers, all sorts of weird and wonderful stalls. It's a great atmosphere!
