It was a few years ago, but my best friend and I visited Great Barrier Island for a couple of days at the start of our Work & Travel holiday. The island is nice and there's a beautiful national park that features a great walk and pretty beaches! The locals were also great and we liked the place where we camped, called The Great Barrier Lodge (they did have dorms, too). There we met a small group of other backpackers and everyone was very friendly and relaxed. I remember one guy went fishing and shared his catch when he got back to the hostel. We ended up having a huge dinner and everyone prepared something little. The only downside to Great Barrier is that you definitely have to rely on public transport or the locals giving you a lift to get around, although we rented bikes and that was fine, too.
If you're looking for a nice getaway for a weekend or so, I'd recommend you to go. It's a fairly quiet place and non-touristy all in all but that made it special and very New Zealand in a way (if you know what I mean ;)).
