I am planning to go to Malaysia just before Christmas with a couple of friends.

We basically wanna spend some time on a not too busy 'paradise' island and enjoy the beaches. I read the monsoon season is then, so what would you recommend? Is it even worth going during that period or should we instead try the Philippines?

Names of islands or places are appreciated.

On the eastcoast of west malaysia is monsoon but...on the west coast its high season. Ever heard of Langkawi.
Its a beautiful relaxed island with a lot of nature an nice beaches.

come back for more info if you want,

Funny, I was just looking at the options in Langkawi! It looks nice, although isn't it rather full of tourists? I see so many resorts! We're not necessarily looking for the best in terms of Western style comfort, but more like an authentic experience of Malaysian beach life..

Another thing I found, Tioman Island. Any recommendations on this?

Anyway, Malaysia looks so awesome! Can't wait to go!

Tioman is also on the east side so will be having monsoon.
Langkawi is nice, but much of the cheap accommodation has gone for bigger resorts, and it will be crowded in Dec as its Msia school holidays.
Thailand might be an option, Krabi, Phuket side.

The Philippines is a Catholic country, if you want the Xmas spirit, you'll have thousand of islands to choose from.

But I would rather be in Malaysia. I want to check out the beaches of Pahang soon.

You may want to consider Pulau Pangkor or Pulau Pinang (also known as Penang), though it is not as big as Langkawi.

Other island to consider are those in the state of Sabah -
Layang-layang, Sapi, Manukan: close to Kota Kinabalu town (capital of Sabah)
Sipadan (best for scuba diving) : need to transit.
