Dream Romantic Trip at Christmas Time

If you were living in Germany, and the love of your life was coming to visit for a fortnight in December, where would you go?

What are the most romantic places in Europe in December? Where would you go for a beautiful, magical dream?

If you're looking at cities, Rome is beautiful at Christmas. I've been there for two Christmas periods now and it is just so atmospheric. Weather both times was perfect. Crisp and sunny, but not too cold. The other places that spring to mind are Vienna and Prague.

If you're talking cabin in the woods/ski resort then you are spoiled for choice with Austria and Switzerland right next to you. The border of Switzerland and Italy really is just out of this world in terms of Alpine scenery. Somewhere like Lugano, Locarno, Lake Como are is just so beautiful and not far by train from either Zurich or Milan. These locations would be spectacular! at this time of year.

All the previous posters have mentioned capital cities so far. Let´s break with this somewhat narrowminded habit.
I´d go to Sibiu in Transilvania, Romania. I was there last Summer, and I was pleasantly surprised by the stunning beauty of this town. It was the cultural capital of Europe in 2007, and in my view this was more than deserved.
The Romanians I spoke with while staying in Sibiu were enthousiastic of the town´s evening and night life all through the year. So spending Christmas and-or New Year´s eve in this town will most likely be worthwhile too.

Salzburg - great castle, great Christmas market, famous puppet theatre (don't miss), and the skiing slopes of the Alpes (St Johann) are only one hour away.

Thank you all for your suggestions! I'm thinking of an amalgam of the ideas: visiting Rome for a few days, a few days on a lake in northern Italy or Switzerland, visiting the Nürnburg Christkindlmarkt, and ending up in a small city in Bavaria for Christmas itself.
The Sibiu, Romania suggestion is interesting, but getting there is a bit trickier.. And I love Salzburg, but have been there so often, that I'd like to try something new!

Bruges is a wonderful place to be in around Christmas. A small historic city with lots to see.

What about Lake Bled near Llubijana in Slovenia? Stunning!
