Transportation question from Hong Kong to Ha Noi

I will be arriving in Hong Kong this October 17th with a good buddy of mine. We plan on spending roughly 3 or 4 days in Hong Kong and then off to Ha Noi. Although were not sure whether or not we should fly or go by train.

I was hoping if someone has gone by train they could share their experience with me and how much it cost them in total. If flying seems to be the best way, should we try and find last minute deals or book something now in advance?

Also, will we need a visa if we decide to go by train since we'll be in mainland China?

Unfortunately I haven't done either but I can take a guess ....

The train will take a very long time, flying will be much quicker. We looked at doing this & you need to change trains at least twice within china therefore adding more hassle (remember it's questionable whether anyone will speak english where you're stopping so finding the correct train will be hard enough).

Flying will of course be quicker but may even be cheaper or at the lest not too much more expensive. Try AirAsia.com for some great deals. TigerAirways.com too, but not sure if they fly your route.

You will def need at least a transit (7 day) visa for china) & this is what prevented us from doing that route because we could get visa's (just before the olympics) perhaps they have relaxed the rules again now though?

Flight is your best choice, I think.
Train is not convinient, Vietnam and China had cancel the train from Nan Ning to Ha Noi
If you want to go by train, you 'll have to take the way round to Henan cross the border to Vietnam at Kekou border (Lao Cai) this is not a wise choice
