Hey has anyone used Space Bags?? They are ziplock type bags but you can squish out all of the air to fit a lot of stuff in the bag. Or they have ones you use a vaccuum with to suck out all of the air?
Trying to figure out how to pack all my stuff into one backpack for Australia!
It's a gimmick-anyone carrying that much stuff is overdoing it big time.
Also-where in creation is a person going to find a vacuum before leaving a hostel @ 05:00 hrs?
I disagree - I used space bags for a 3 month trip & it was fantastic!
They pretty much just take out all the extra air in folding etc, doesn't work too well on jeans & harder materials, but great on other things.
I don't know specific brands, but I bought mine from a department store in Sydney (Myer)..and the zip lock ones work fine..
I bought a couple spacesaver bags where you squish the air out, and it did help to make squish it down a bit but then instead of having a lot of small items of clothing to put in my backpack I had three larger bulkier packs to try and squish my toiletries in with - I think it's good to keep some clothes loose because that's what I always use to fill in the little empty spaces between things like shoes and other harder things.
I agree with Sam, personally....its just gonna have you carrying round a whole lotta stuff you really don't need to be!
the only question that i have with the bags, is what happens if Customs opens it up ????
I think the other thing you need to think about is do you really want to be carrying that much extra weight. sure you can pack 3 or 4 times the suff into your bag but do you really want to carry arround 3 or 4 times the weight. I think they can be good to pack a few things in or to keep your clean clothing seprate from your dirty clothing but you have to really consider how much you are willing to carry over the long run. I think you will find if you have the extra space you will pack things you dont need and will endup not wanting ot carry it.
I had used a bag like this, but it did not require a vacuum. You just put your clothes in it and then roll and squeeze out the extra air. This worked okay for me. I used it on a 5 week backpacking trip. It helped create space for packing it all in. But I discovered that the bag had a small leak and it filled up all the extra space in the backpack. Prob did add extra weight too (can't remember...this was 5 years ago!). So it helped to initially fit everything in my bag, but I prob wouldn't use it again.
