Working in Kuala Lumpur - even possible?

Travel Forums Asia Working in Kuala Lumpur - even possible?

Hi guys,

I am in KL at the moment & looking for temporary work 2-4 weeks. Everywhere I've asked (supermarkets, bars, hotels, restaurants & even mcDonalds & KFC) give the same answer...

"we only employ malaysian people, not foreigners".

Firstly, imagine saying that in the UK ... sorry we don't employ (french / spanish / african / insert here) wwe only employ English.

To be honest that doesn't bother me though, I just need a job ... is there anywhere you could recommend??

Cheers

DoA

That's their way of saying that they can't employ you legally. You're in the country on a social visit pass, not work permit. I'm sure there are employers who don't mind taking temp staff who don't have a permit, but a Caucasian working in places you looked for is virtually non-existent, except upscale bars and restaurants which even then, are usually in senior posts.

I doubt this could help much, but there's no harm trying to ask the British High Commission or the British Council and see if they could help you with anything. Both are within walking distance from the Petronas Twin Towers. If that fails, try other bars.

You can't say that because the 1976 Race Relations Act makes it unlawful for an employer to discriminate against you on racial grounds (colour, nationality, ethnic or national origins). Plus, EU/EEA citizens have the right to live and work in the UK. The Malaysian government has just last week agreed to look into enacting the RRA after a public outroar over a politician who made racist comments.

Sorry, that was supposed to sound ironic. You'd get hung if you said that in the UK.

I had no idea that it was only a social pass but actually it makes total sense because you even need a seperate visa for Oz for working ... hmm looks like 2 weeks without work then because by time I get anything sorted with the high commision it'll be too late.... oh well

Thanks for the great advice, as always

ps. Honestly, is there anything, about anywhere in the world that you don't know? :P :D
