Quoting Mr.Barker
I bought a 1997 Ford Explorer 4x4 in Santiago, Chile in July. The process took me six days in total.
I drove throughout Chile, Argentina, and Peru with zero hassles. I lived out of the car, thereby avoiding hotel or hostel expenses.
Anyone who plans to buy a car here in Santiago or Chile in general is welcome to shoot me any questions. I should be able to answer them since the process is still fresh in my mind. Not quite coincidentally, I am looking to sell my car around the end of October.
ciao,
John BarkerHi John,
Wife and I are living (3 months now) in Bariloche, Patagonia, Argentina. Moved here from Antigua, Guatemala (2 years) and previously San Antonio, Texas, USA. We are in the travel business (specialty company doing art workshop/tours to Guatemala and Ecuador). We also have an import/export business which keeps us traveling all around Central and South America.We want to do some serious back road traveling throughout Central and South America by vehicle (all our travels for the past 10 years have been - fly in, rent a car, drive around, fly out). We want to spend the next year or two driving these countries and villages. We have run inot a snag - the Artgentina gov't will not allow a non-resident to take their car outside of Argentina. This forces us to figure out a way we can buy a vehicle somewhere else so that we can so our South and Central America traveling. Questions;
1. Can you take a car you buy in Chile and drive it to other countries (appears you did)?
2. Can you sell it when you are finished in other countries, or do you have to bring it back to Chile to sell it?
3. Can you take it to Argentina and back (looks like you did)?
4. Don't you have to have a Chile addxress to get a RUT and buy you car and get insurance there?I know I have some other questions but will address them when I hear from you.
Thanks, johnk
Dear John,
I am hoping to do the same and would love to have the same info. What is the process for purchasing.
Matt
Johnk- I just finished a trip from Texas to Argentina, in a great and economical combination (Ford diesel F250 with a Lance Camper) and returned to Texas, I have permission on the vehicles (Temp permit) for 1 year in Uruguay. I wish to sell both units, after I return shortly and use for a week or so, this is to save the shipping charge home.
A friend, did the same with his motorhome, sold and had a title made in the name of the new owner,actually transferring the vehicle between borders - the French family that purchased had the vehicle entered on their passport and drove north to the USA, where it was orginated from. What the south american countries are concerned about is that the vehicle is NOT sold to a citizen of their country and IMPORTED.
I AM looking for someone with a foreign passport who wishes this type of vehicle, if you have this, maybe you are interested. It has a Texas title.
Chile is a land of extraordinary beauty and diversity, weaving along much of the Pacific coast of South America. Santiago, the Chilean capital, is set against the stunning backdrop of the Andes. Chile also lays claim to one of the southernmost towns on earth, Punta Arenas.
