I have never travelled before and I have 6 weeks to travel from Hong Kong to Singapore next year and wish to see as much as is physically possible without killing myself lol ... What is must see/do?

I already have a few ideas Halong Bay in Vietnam being one of them, There's 2 of us going (girls) and were open to suggestions, we did look at intrepid but decided they were too restricting for us!!!

Ill be really grateful for any ideas and advice experienced travellers can give me.

Thanks peeps x :)

wow, that's really quick to go from HK to Singapore. I would say that you need at least 3 months to do this trip and still make it relaxing. But if 6 weeks is all you got, then you can work with it. I think what you'll have to do is choose between two methods of travel - either be wiling to spend long stretches on the road (like frequent 20 hour bus/train journeys) and be able to spend enough time in highlight towns. Or you can just constantly be on the road every day to see lots but never stay more than a day or two in each place. I guess you'll probably do a combination of both, but either way, you'll be busy. Consider flying on occasion to save yourself some long bus rides.
If you are going overland the whole way there's a few different routes that you can choose depending on your interest. From China you can enter either Vietnam or Laos and continue on to Cambodia and/or Thailand. From Thailand its all straightforward down to Singapore.
My highlights in the region that you might choose from - Yangshuo in China (not really on the way but worth trying to get to), Sapa, Halong, Hanoi, and Hoi An in Vietnam, Angkor in Cambodia, Luang Prabang in Laos, Chiang Mai and the Islands in Thailand, and Penang, and the Perhentians in Malaysia.

- Hanoi: 1 or 2 days
- Hue: the ancient capital of Vietnam (2 or 3 days) very tranquil town
- Hoi An: (3 days) yummy food, lovely town .......and ....... and ....... and
- Nha Trang: beach, boat tours, cheap bars and night life (2 days)
- Da Lat: easyriders is the great way to enjoy the beautiful place
- Ho Chi Minh city: Cu Chi tunnel, mekong delta.......
3. Cambodia: Killing field, Pnompenh, Siem Reap (visit the famous Angkor Watt) 9 days or more

Wow .... Thank you all for your exciting ideas, they certainly are food for thought!

We will fly inbetween if needs be, and we're open to several overnight trains/buses.
Somebody suggested leaving Hong Kong via ferry to Macau and visiting a circus there ... has anyone done this? Then god only knows from there on lol, maybe fly or overnight train to Hanoi?

Dinadmin your idea looks good, where did it come from?

I dont think we're going to travel into China much, as thats something we want to do on a future trip. We definately want to see Vietnam and Luangprabang in Laos, and spend a few weeks in Thailand, so we can chill as well as explore. We want to see Kuala Lumpur and spend about 4 days in Singapore (somebody suggested taking a train form KL to Sing).

Keep the ideas coming!!!

Nics x

If it was me I'd go from HK to Macau (and win some money in a casino.....lol). Then into mainland China at Zhuhai and then north-west to Guanxi Province and go to Guilin and Yangshuo. Spend a few days there. Then travel by coach or train from Guilin and cross into Thailand from the south of Guanxi Province at Ping Xiang. From there I'd spend about 3 weeks to a month in Vietnam, Laos and Thailand doing whatever interests you. From Thailand enter the north of Malaysia at Kota Bahru and travel down the east coast to Pulao Tiomen before heading to KL for a couple of days, then take the train to Singapore.

I wish it I had the time to do it, myself. :(

Anyway, good luck and enjoy.

I would travel from hanoi & Halong Bay, by train to Hue, the bus to Ho ann, then fly to HCMC, ferry to Phenom Phen, bus to Ko Chang, bus to Bangkok, Fly to Phuket, bus back to Surit thani, train to Penang (almost), then fly to KL, bus to Malacca, bus through to Singapore. Im exhausted just thinking about it!

There is a hell of a lot to see in-between, and would not be much time to relax...but your only young once!

That sounds fab Daphnemaia! I might just have to take you up on your offer of help ... it would be great to get some information off a local. We have been thinking of Penang too.

We arrive in Hong Kong on 28th April and fly out of Singapore on 10th June ... what will the weather be like do you know?
