Hi Peoples,

Im currently in Fiji but leave for NZ in 3 weeks time. IT's fairly last minute but I would like to pick up a car rental on the cheap for the time I am in NZ.
In total I will be there for 6 weeks and wonder what the cheapest way to rent is. I've heard you can get one way deals from Aulkland to Christchurch and Christchurch to Aulkland fairly cheap or would I be better just getting one singe hire and return the rental to Aulkland where I fly in and out from.

Any advise and suggestions on the best companies would be appreciate.

Thanks

Chester

I don't know specifically for NZ, but in general it is cheaper the longer you rent a car, although usually prices don't drop more if you rent more than 1 month.
Also, returning the car in the same place usually is free, while sometimes a drop-off fee has to be paid when returning the car in a different place. I don't know by head though if this is the case in NZ, between north and south island for example.

I think it would be better for you to get one single hire for the whole period. Recently I spent three months in New Zealand, and I rented from Apex. They were okay, and they have many offices all across NZ, which helps if you need something from them.
They were also pretty cheap.

Hiya mate, I'd look in Jucy Car Rentals. We just hired a car for 3 days when in Auckland to go around the Coromandel Peninsula and it was brilliant. I think we had this flyer that can be picked up in most hostels that gave us an upgrade from the "El Cheapo" to the "Compact." Bargain at like $19 a day (I think) and was a nice and new little car to drive.

I know that you can pick up and drop off elsewhere so worth having a look into. http://www.jucy.co.nz/

Hope this helps

Although Jucy is rather cheap, you really get what you pay for with them. When I rented with them, I had my car broken into (window smashed in, dashboard ripped out completely in order to get to the car radio), and the people manning the Jucy call center were completely unhelpful and unsympathetic, interested only in ascertaining that none of the damage was their responsibility to pay for. Their policies not only didn't cover any of the damage (when I cause an accident, sure, but I'd have liked to know in advance that I'd be responsible when damage was completely out of my control), but I also wasn't allowed to replace the car radio myself, which meant I had to travel for the remaining time without any music - not fun when you're in a car by yourself and have hours and hours of driving to do.

The whole thing left a really bad taste in my mouth; definitely never going to rent with them again.

The relocations deals will not be valid for a 6 weeks holiday. They are designed to relocate vehicles as quickly as possible (eg 2-3 days). Also they are usually offered at the end/beginning of the peak season.
Travelling for 6 weeks though, will get you good prices at this time, depending of course on what you are willing to compromise about.
There are a lot of small-medium size companies which will give you good price on a good vehicle. I wouldn't go for the cheapest of cheapest, as in my experience too cheap comes with a price.
In the few times we have hired we used a small family-owned company that gave us a good offer and you could see by the way they handled everything they actually care. You can try contacting them http://www.allwaysrental.co.nz. Other good companies I know of are Apex - http://www.nzrentalcar.co.nz/ or Explore More - http://www.exploremore.co.nz/

Thats pretty bad Sander, i'm sorry to hear of your troubles. Did they not give you the option of taking out insurance when you rented the vehicle because if not surely there's some sort of malpractice on their part?

I had a similar problem with Wicked Campers in Oz where they gave me a camper that was not deemed roadworthy by a RACQ certified garage. To be fair they were pretty helpful and did all they could for us. Others may of had a great experience with Wicked but i would be cautious in the future when renting again.
