Hi! I have booked with hostelworld.com many times without a problem but I am searching for accomodation in Munich at the end of September 2009. I am wanting to go to Oktoberfest but it is only giving me one hotel option for Munich.
Is this because everywhere is fully booked already or because I am trying to book too far in advance?
I'm pretty certain it's because it's too far in advance.
I tried some Munich accommodation searches here at travellerspoint (using the new beta interface, which makes searches much faster), and I get only two hotels for late september 2009 (and the same two much cheaper for late october 2009), six (ho(s)tels) for late august 2009, eleven for late december 2008, and twenty-two for late october 2008.
The way I understand these booking systems to work is that properties need to tell the systems about their availability (reserving the rooms in question for the booking system). If it's more than a few months in advance, they won't have told the system about the rooms yet, and so their availability will appear to be zero.
Probably best to contact the properties in question directly in this case, and use the accommodation booking system only to learn about the different options.

I believe hostels/guesthouses have a problem pricing rooms that far in advance. I've noticed the same thing for many hotels in Thailand. They can't afford to quote prices with inflation tied to the world's economy. Keep trying - I found that there are places out there that will allow you to book quite far in advance. In Thailand, for instance, I'm paying upfront and have already paid for my hostel for next February.
The best time to go shopping for accomodation during Octoberfest seems to be December to March. Early December is the time when most hotels have recovered from this year's Octoberfest, all employees have returned from much-needed holidays and they can start making plans about the next Octoberfest. Plus most hotels traditionally do their yearly accounting after Christmas, at which time they decide upon new prices for the next year. So yeah, you are too early.
At least you're doing the right thing by looking to book in advance rather than do what most people do and book too late. Then they proceed to post a topic on the site asking why there isn't any accomodation and if there is anyway they could find a place, etc. A lot of people, at least those I know would book around springtime (March-April) and by this time, even earlier, the late September dates on Hostelworld should be up for booking.
