Would you get by backpacking on $24,000? What kind of standard of living would you have?

For that money (assuming it's US dollars) you can travel in Australia for a year without needing to work, staying in small dorm rooms in high quality hostels, buying supermarket food to cook your own meals, travelling by public transport to the next destination about once a week, and splurging on an expensive activity/tour or a restaurant meal every other week or so.
Obvious the money would stretch a lot further in South America / SE Asia, and not nearly as far in Europe.

No, you wouldn't?

I'm sorry, I don't understand what you're trying to say or ask with that followup question.

If it's related to the new thread you created specifically about the US, then no, it probably isn't quite enough to spend an entire year in the US (although it'd still last a long time; and maybe it would work, but it'd definitely be harder due to the lack of backpacker-friendly infrastructure in the USA).

I realize you have created three similar threads on this subject now. If our answers aren't good enough, maybe you should try to clarify your question a bit more, detailing your situation and plans. The more information we have, the easier it is to give a helpful answer. With your one sentence questions, you're mostly letting us take stabs into the dark as to what you're really asking.

No, I just want to know, would that be about an average figure going for a year or so?

Marcus, your question isn't specific enough.

If you're going to spend a while in the likes of Thailand, Indonesia, rural China, India, and a bit of time in Australia and New Zealand, backpacking, then it will definitely be enough.

But if you want some luxury, want to skydive every 5 minutes, spend 3 months travelling across the USA, it won't.

Y'see?

It depends what you want to do?

So what do you want to do? :):(

24 thousand dollars could give you two years in Central America and you wouldn't have to be that frugal. I sort of thought the question was a bit of a joke. I left with ten thousand once, and stayed out nine months. I came back with four thousand, though I did work as a cook in one place, which gave me a couple of grand over two months.

To where?

But, you wouldn't get far in Australia, NZ, US/CAN?

It would be enough in Australia/NZ (see the first reply by me in this thread; complete with description of what kind of accommodation, food and transport you could have for that money), but it wouldn't be quite enough for the US (see the second reply by me in this thread).
