I will be travelling to Egypt from India and would like to know of some economical places to stay in. My trip can vary from 25 days to longer, starting December. I have read about the hostels but am not too sure about quality and security.
Could someone throw some light on this please?
The term hostels is misleading when travelling in Egypt. Hostels in Egypt are very similar to cheap hotels in India. The kind of room that costs 5 USD in India costs about 7 USD in Egypt. The difference is made in the crowd, cheap hotels become hostels in Egypt if their main customers are young Westerners that travel independently and spent less than 15 USD on a room and if they have a common room or lobby for they guest to meet each other.
As t_maia says a lot of "hostels" will be more like budget hotels, even in the big cities in India for me.
Quality and security will be less at these places, although I think a lot of travellers, especially those that go to such countries have mutual respect for eachother, and locals tend to be very nice and wouldn't often do such a thing.
I did stay in a place called the Australian Hostel near Talat Harb area in Cairo, which was a bit more like a hostel with a common room. It was a bit shabby and the dorm room didn't have a lock, but the owners and travellers were extremely nice and it's in a cool location so I didn't mind
If you're really concerned though the mid-range hotels should have good security, maybe at the cost of being fairly unsociable places.
