Hey guys and girls!!

Im deffo going travelling the end of Jan, but i am not sure were i am going apart from to AUS!!
I wanted to go to Aus in Jan till mid May, then go to Philly USA (to play rugby for 3 months) then back to Bris/Gold coast to play some mroe rugby and travel then head home end of Jan 2010?! But the ticket was going to cost £2500 so thinking of going to Thailand for 4 weeks, then Bali (think its Bali) for 2 weeks, Then Aus for about 10 months then New Zealand for 4 weeks then back to UK!?

Does anyone think this is a good idea?I am a 24 year old guy, and im pretty street smarts but it is a good idea to just jump on a plane and wing it, get an Hostel in Thailand while am there?.. Get an Hostel while am in Aus??

All i am planning on taking is a ruck sack,My Camera,Laptop and some clothes!

Is there anyone else about them time that i could meet up with for a few weeks??

Cheers
Kev M

The reason that ticket would be so expensive is the flight back to Australia from the USA and then back to the UK. If you'd drop that last step, flying on to the UK from Philly, you could get a Round the World ticket, which for UK-Thailand-Bali-Australia-New Zealand-Los Angeles-Philadelphia-UK shouldn't cost you more than £1000-£1500 or thereabouts (depending on airport taxes and stuff).

It's a splendid idea - lots of people doing it, and you'll have the time of your life. It's generally a good idea to book a hostel ahead for the first few days that you'll arrive in the country, just so you can be assured of a place to stay while you get your bearings. If you're staying in one location for a couple of months, it's then worth looking for an apartment or share house to stay at.
Definitely get a working holiday visa for Australia so you can stay there for those 10 months and earn money while there. If you love beautiful nature, New Zealand deserves more than just four weeks (I'd recommend two months to fully see the country). Otherwise the plan looks sound.

Cheers Sander!!
The thing is im hoping to get set up with a rugby team before i fly out to GoldCoast Briss at the end of Jan, so going to Thailand isnt really an option for more than 2 weeks, and i wanna be in Philly (New York) for end of May, which means i am only allowed 3 months there without having to go to the Embassy and get a visa for the USA,, so i was really wanting to come back to Aus after!!

But i think im going ot go with ym 2nd idea, Thailand,Blai,Fiji (are those two even close?)Aus and New Zealand then back to UK for about Feb 2010, and hopefully home 3 months then Philly in 2010 to play some rugby!!

I really could do with tagging along with some travellers tho, but ive enjoyed reading these little blogs, its made my mind up to not take my laptop, and just upload pics in internet cafes and store or all the pics on memory sticks ill be backing with me!!

Ah, I see. Yeah, then you're going to have to make hard choices. (Maybe only leave in May, and start with the USA? Though I suspect that doesn't sound like a very good plan either...) :)

Not really. Bali is northwest of Australia, Fiji is way east (north of New Zealand), so I'd visit Australia (and maybe New Zealand) first, before heading to Fiji. There's usually cheap return flights to Fiji advertised at all travel agencies in Australia and New Zealand.

I'm actually in the camp of people who believe that a laptop is great to take along. It allows you to do secure internet banking (no way you want to do that in internet cafes with who knows what kind of keyloggers lurking), has all your favorite bookmarks and settings and email right there, and it's great for burning backup DVDs. (Those memory cards will fill up in weeks; burning to DVD is the way to go (since a harddisk is volatile memory, and can't be relied upon), and doing this yourself is quite a bit cheaper than paying internet cafes to do it. (Also, always make two backup copies and send one home by post for safekeeping.))
Anyway, I'd recommend searching the forums for "laptop" to get an endless string of threads with pro and con arguments. :)
