I'm starting to save up for a trip to south america next year and I just wondered if anybody had any idea about budgeting over there.
I'm more than happy to rough it (i.e. hostels/cheapest BnB and chicken buses) and want to see as much as I can in what will probably be 4-5 months, just looking to get a rough idea of a per day/ per week budget.
Any help you could give me would be much appreciated!
$US50/day should see you right.
Some days you won't spend nearly that much other times when moving from place to place ......
$50 a day, does that include bus fares and hostel prices for the night? Or is $50 an estimate of what you'll be spending on meals, shopping, etc. ?
Maybe 50 dollars for accom and food, but thats it. Brasil and Chile will cost the most, esp brasil. Buses are cheap but sometimes airfare is cheaper than bus ( for example Sao Paulo to Buenos Aires).
It really depends on where you go. Second the previous poster that Chile and esp. Brazil are expensive (Brazil is almost at European price level with transport and some accom); Ecuador and Bolivia are incredibly cheap, Argentina and Peru somewhere in the middle. Don't know about Venezuela and Colombia.
All in all, I'd guess that U$50 a day should be sufficient, if that excludes the intercontinental flights and if you don't do too many packaged excursions or crazy party nights.
