Supposing you are hostelling ftom place to place, is it easy to register with a Dentist if a bit of work needs to be done? If so, which is the best country for seeing Dentists?

I had to take a trip to the dentists while in Argentina in 2007.
I had just spend 2 and a half days on buses getting from Buenos Aires to Puerto Madryn and on my 1st night there i had severe toothache. So bad i wanted to rip the tooth out there and then.
Well at 2am 2 lovely argentinian women and 1 from chicago staying at the youth hostel took me to the hospital as my spanish was poor. The doctor gave me an injection in my bum which funnily enough took away the pain.
I managed to find a dentist the next day who without an xray said the tooth needs to come out now.

Well with it being peak season i had booked hostels for the next 2 weeks but wasnt trusting this dentist.I ended up emailing the hostels to reschedule and they were so nice about it.Then booked a flight to Buenos Aires and headed to the British Hospital where they also have dentists.I explained the problem in my poor spanish and within 20 minutes i had an xray and the tooth was pulled out.

Then dentist there was so nice and i couldnt get seen that quickly in england.Plus it was about a third of the price i would pay in England.

Next up was the 2 and a half days bus journey back south to continue my trip.

I had some dental work done in Thailand when I was there. Thailand has plenty of skilled dentists and dental clinics in most cities. In Pattaya, you can walk into many of the offices and see a dentist the next day. Some of the clinics will see you the same day. Decent care at a reasonable price.

Hey Mike, What sort of prices were they quoting in Thailand? I know it's dependant on what you need to get done, but if you remember any costs it would be good to hear them?

I think the great destination for dentists is thailand...I think the biggest dental practice center is thailand.

I was thinking of Western places though, what about Aus or NZ?

The exhuberant costs that they charge you here in Aus is astronomical !!!!
$250 + xray can put you out of pocket for $350 minimum (thats just an extraction or filling). Be prepared to be in pain for at least 3-5 days - thats the waiting time on average ( unless in extreme pain ) they may be able to squeeze you in. Destistry work is NOT covered by Medicare here. Make sure you have private health insurance....

I believe the situation is similar here in NZ too. I've never had any dental work done here (touch wood)! but my boyfriend has and the prices were much higher than the uk. Not sure about waiting times.
