ill be travelling through central america for about 5-6 month from the beginning of next year.
after reading what the danish ambasseys had to say about the countries in this area, i must say i got little concerned about all the listings of crime they claim are committed in these areas..
so i just wanted to ask people who have travelled in these areas, how real the concern should really be..?
Are the dangers in central and south america really that many?
Govt warnings are usually worth the paper they're written on.
Check the local newpapers in Canada or the USA for all the crime that goes on there. There is crime in Latin America, and some of it is violent, but it is the exception, not the rule, and there is no sense getting terrified about it. Just keep a weather eye. Don't live in \fear dude.
Also I find the 'Dangers and Annoyances' section in Lonely Planet books give a pretty realistic account of what to be aware of.
I used to live in Honduras and there would be a photo of someone who had been murdered on the front cover of the newspaper most days. The worst i had however was a half-hearted attempt to take my bag by some kid on drugs. Oh, and sand fly bites!
The only thing you have to worry about is using common sense.
Theres no more danger in these countries than there is in places in England and all over the world.
