Hey eberby - you have received quite an extensive response from findemundo in your other thread concerning cameras.

camera advice

As for travelers checks - I can't speak for S. America but in Panama, only American Express checks were accepted, if they were accepted at all. Sadly, our bank only issues Visa travelers checks and we were only able to cash two of them at our hotel in Panama City as an emergency measure. They took the money from their petty cash box to cover them because we looked so desparate. We were - we were down to our last $20 in real cash and it was Carnival. When the banks finally opened 3 days later, we visited 12 different ones, trying to cash the Visa checks but ended up having to do an ATM credit card withdrawl. Travelers checks can be handy at times, but they are becoming a banking dinosaur.

Hey eberby,
I couldn't agree more with Isadora. Travelers checks in S. America are non-existant. An ATM debit card is the best way to carry money around. There are ATM machines EVERYWHERE and the conversion fees are lower than traverlers checks or wiring money. The key to security is using a machine in a bank, going to a machine with a friend and not taking out too much at a time.

Many hostels don't take plastic, they run on cash. But some of the higher end ones may, and hotels certainly do.
