Travel Forums Europe How to get UK NI Number?

Hi ,
i am in the midst of preparing for my UK working holiday trip and i came across this "UK NI Number". I understand that in order to work in UK, i need to apply for such.
Where can i apply for this? I came across some website that it takes at least 2mths! Is that true?

Further more, i understand that we need to provide them with a UK local address. How could we produce such where we do not have any friends there + the fact that we are constantly moving around..

Blur..

Check this out: Applying for a National Insurance number (NI Number)

Depending on how busy they are, it can take a month or two for the whole process to complete. You don't need to apply for one until you're here. The fastest way to get it is to apply when you got a job. They will then expedite your application because you'll be making contributions very soon. £££!!! :)

Hien, thanks for the reply.
THat sounds very true!! Expediate when they knows that $ is coming in.

However, does that mean that i can apply even is i do not have a job offer?

Hi,

Applying for an NI is a big pain and does take forever... The hardest bit is proving your address. You do need to have a 'permanent' address so my advice would be to get a job (or at least an offer) first so you know where you will be based then get your boss or land lord to write you a letter. When you go for your interview they give you a slip of paper to give to your employer to say you have applied ect... I got my NI number after a month, still waiting for my card (4months now). But definitally dont worry about it till you get here.

An NI card is just a record of the NI number for your own records - as long as you know your number, you don't need the card as your eligibility to work is checked by the employer (this is a legal requirement) and your NI & personal details checked by Revenue & Customs when your employer files this information with them.

Thanks for the reply guys. But just another question. Do I need to have a job offer before i can apply? or can i apply even without a job?

Didn't you read the information on the page?

When and where should I apply for a National Insurance number?

You should apply for a NI number if:

* you will be making a claim for benefit, or
* your partner is claiming benefit for you.

This should be done through your local Jobcentre Plus office. You can find your local office on the Jobcentre Plus website.

You should also apply for a NI number if:

* you have started or are about to start work
* you are self-employed, or
* you want to pay voluntary NI contributions and would benefit from paying them.

If you haven't got a job yet and you want to apply, you must prove it to them that you are actively seeking.
