Hi folks,
I´ve had enough of the over hyping and commercialisation of Christmas and would like to be away from home (Ireland) for this Christmas. But, where to go? It has to be in Europe. I still want to feel like it´s Christmas but not like here where the shop windows are already starting to be decked out in Christmas gaudiness.
I´ll be travelling alone and don´t really mind which country I end up in.
Does anyone have suggestions of where I might go? Preferably somewhere that has unusual Christmas traditions.
I´ll leave it in your capable hands.
Zaksame

Anywhere in Europe that I know suffers from the commercialization of Christmas, so I'm not giving you much hope of escaping it. (Still, maybe someone will yet come in knowing about some hidden outpost of sanity. If so, don't be surprised if you'll meet me there.) ^_^

The best Christmas I've spent in Europe was in the Algarve, southern Portugal. Had Christmas dinner outside at a restaurant right there on the beach, with the temperature a breezy 20 degrees celsius. (A heater was turned on, but barely necessary for sitting outside.) Best of all, this otherwise rather touristy area of Portugal was all but deserted.

Thanks Sander,
funny, I was just about to book a flight to Faro in Portugal and take it from there. Sounds good to me. Thanks for the help.

Spain doesn't really celebrate xmas like we do here in the UK & Ireland. So perhaps go to a place in the North where there are no brit tourists and it should be great.

Thanks Bwiiian,
I was thinking of that also as I´m just back from a couple of weeks in Asturias, Cantabria and Galicia. A really great part of the world it has to be said. Thanks for the advice.

Santiago De Compostella is an incredible city that I would really recommend. It has an old walled part to the city which is really beautiful. I imagine xmas there to be lovely. Although it is a place for a christian pilgrimige so at xmas perhaps it will be busy? I am not sure of this as I am not religious. I went last February and it was a great, with no other Brits in sight!! Santander is also a great city in the North and both of these places are (or at least from Liverpool) served by ryanair, so cheap flights!

Thanks again Bwiiian,
I've spent time in each place and I love both of them (especially Santander I have to say, you gotta love that tapas bar El Diluvio on General Mola). I was hoping to go somewhere with a completely different viewpoint on Christmas. Truth is I don't know what I want, that's why I'm asking for advice.
Thanks again for the advice and keep them coming.

I went scuba diving one xmas day about 4 or 5 years ago in the Canary Islands. It was great as no-one else was scuba diving that day as they were all celebrating xmas somewhere. It was just me and the instructor and not a xmas tree or pudding in sight!!
Thinking about it though, why not try some where like Morocco? Cheap to get to and not that far but it will definately be different to a European xmas as long as you stay away from the tourist areas.

Thanks to everyone for their help (even if I used the wrong name once, sorry). And the decisison is.... (drum roll)... a flight to Faro in Portugal, then follow the coast and hope to be in Morocco for Christmas. That's the plan, so let's see how it turns out.
Thanks again folks.
