You should definitely check out some hostel web sites, even if you still book hotels just for your first destination then sus it out from there on. Hostels are fun, and fairly friendly, and like someone else said you can sometimes get a private room. The other thing suggested was the 'staying with locals thing' that sounds pretty awesome, even if you do it just once you should give it a try.
cheers, have fun!!!

Slovenia is beautiful!! unless you want the nightlife of a city, I wouldn't spend 5 nights in the capital though. Must see is Blek and the lakes and the caves ofcourse. All a day's trip from the capital if you decide to stay there. The eastern part of Slovenia is better than the western in natural beauty.

We hope to visit the Postojna Caves for a day, and then we may spend our last day at lake Bled, spend the night there, and early the next day, head back to Ljubljana to catch our flight.

We're pretty open to whatever atmosphere... We're probably going to keep Ljubljana as our base of operation and for sleeping, as we'll travel from there, but we'll probably only spend a day or two in the city itself..

Ukraine is beautiful country and worth to be visited. And it is huge indeed. Western part - Carpatian mountains are strongly like Switzerland, central and Eastern parts like France, Crimea very cimilar to Italy. Combining visit to Ukraine with Russia is wrong strategy, you will have no adequate impressions just tired with long travel.
