Pop up photo insert into blog

Travel Forums System Talk Pop up photo insert into blog

Hi,

I am pretty sure I asked this in one of the recent threads, but can't seem to find it so said I would post it.

Whenever I am ready to insert photos into my blog, I cringe a little at the pop up device that appears. I would love to see something a little more user friendly, maybe a sort my country option, or tiny thumbnails by default. It just takes me ages to find the right photo as they are sorted by dates, and my dates a screwed up.

I know someone (peter?) mentioned something was on the cards, just wondering if there was a time frame or have I got the wrong end of the stick again?

It is indeed now very near the top :) In fact, I know a version was done up to test locally, but the performance wasn't good enough for those with big galleries, so we've had to go down a different track. Hopefully very very soon!!

It's always hard to pick a timeframe for a feature which isn't done yet. All manner of unforeseen things could mess up planning (performance, IE bugs, ...). But based on the above, I'd give you pretty good odds of seeing it before the end of November.

Wow Sander, that's putting the pressure on :) To be honest, one of the main things holding it back is the limitations in the current design of the entire site that we are running up against. There's not enough space on the blog entry pages to really allow for thumbnails to be clicked on to insert (which is basically the plan by the way). The obvious way to create some extra space is to move the navigation that's on the left, but the designs we've been playing with for that aren't really leaving us with the idea it's an improvement. Swapping out something like this site wide is not quite as scary as it sounds, but still needs some careful thought and rigorous testing once we've decided on a design.

The local testing we've done uses a somewhat different approach but is basically too slow in it's current format, so I don't think it will survive

Just some background info, but be sure it's coming. Until then, the list is sorted by the day you've uploaded the photos, so generally speaking pics you are inserting should be towards the top of the list. Another option is emailing in your entries with photos in them - this is my personal favourite. There seems to be an issue with text that comes after photos being stripped though, so I usually put the text first, then the photos. If I'm not happy with the order I just go in and edit the entry after it shows up in my blog 5 minutes later.

Opps

I have not tried emailing in an entry yet... sounds interesting. Which means I have 101 questions Do the photos go straight into your gallery? Does the formatting need to be in HTML email, I am guessing yes. So the photos appear where you first put them.

I should really try out an emailed blog post, maybe it will be faster?!

No, the email can be plain text. Just write an email, attach the photos to it and send to the right email address (under your Settings page). As I wrote in the last post, you want to put your photos at the very end of the email though because otherwise your text will go missing (not sure if that is a bug or just the only way this can be done properly). The photos are added to your gallery, but they'll be set to private until you change that (which currently isn't possible, but that's a bug that should be fixed very quickly!). Give it a shot; it's pretty nifty and very fast :)

No, the email can be plain text.

Must be, even, or at least contain a plain text equivalent. We discard the HTML part (parsing it just wasn't ever going to work).
You can use simple code in the text to create formatting in the blog post, though.

I'd need to look at one of those emails to be able to tell; it might be that your email program is splitting the plain text equivalent into multiple parts due to the way the photos are inserted. Better than including them inside the text would be to just attach them, rather than trying to position them.

I think it actually might be specific to Apple Mail, because the concept of attachments isn't the same. The photos are actually visible when attached, hence then trying to put them where I thought it made most sense. You learn quickly though; after the first time I just made sure the photos were after the text :)

One correction: this is actually possible now. Fixed that earlier today :)

Okay so looks like I will have to try this email to blog thing in the next post so!

Is there an FAQ on it somewhere? Save me asking FAQ's here aka how to make heading, sub heading etc?

There's a little questionmark next to the setting on your blog Settings page, which leads to this page on moblogging as a popup. That covers most of it. You won't be able to set a subheading, but the subject you give your email becomes the Title of the post. You can always go back in and edit the post later on to add in a subheading, or make other changes. Photos are automatically resized for you after being emailed in.

Give it a shot and feel free to ask away
