I have never come across any problems in the Philippines. It is as safe as any other SE Asian country, but that doesn't mean you should be complacent. You will always stick out for being western, but just try to look as though you know what you are doing and you should be ok. The only part to avoid is the south western part of Mindanao, where there have been problems with the MILF's (the extreme Muslim group, not the other group of people with the same acronym!!!!).

I travelled already several times in the Philippines and I never had any problems concerning safety, not even in South Mindanao. We travelled by public transport, by motorbike and we even hitchhikes > no problems!!!
Of course, the first time it's strange when you enter a pub and see the notice 'please leave your gun at the guard', but hey like bwiiian said, it's as safe as every other SEA country.

I have been to the Philippines many times over the past 10 years. I have never had any problems. If you stick to the tourist areas and don't do something stupid you should be okay.

However, you do have to get used to having police or security guards outside many places. This is not just banks and airports but Seven Eleven stores, bars, malls, hotels and other places like that.

Have a nice holiday.

Thanks for considering the Philippines :) It's pretty safe here for both locals and tourists. Holler when you know when you'll be in town. I'd be happy to meet up with you for a few drinks and maybe share tips about getting around. Meeting a local might help you get more comfortable with the country :)
