how much do i budget for?

i've just quit my job and am daydreaming about travelling through south america for a few months (maybe 6 if i can stretch the budget!). i'm trying to get an idea of how much to budget for per day. we would have a round the world ticket, so some flights would be covered. travel would mostly be by train and bus. we would be happy staying in hostel type accommodation, but in a private room. we don't need fancy restaurants and would happily eat on the street! we'd obviously like to do some of the more expensive stuff like machu picchu, iguazu falls, patagonia, the amazon, etc.

any ideas on cost would be greatly appreciated.

My boyfriend and I are planning on travelling through South America starting in Feb and I have been doing a fair bit of research asking the same question as you. I found this great website, you should check it out:

Also, for Machu Picchu it is about US$380-450 for a decent tour for a 4 day trek. Iguazu falls is cheap, stay on the Argentina side of the falls as the accommodation is cheaper and better. Not sure about patagonia and the amazon sorry, maybe someone else could help you out there.

Some days you won't spend $15 other days will be much more expensive-travelling/whatever.

thanks for your reply! the link had some fantastic information and i've also found a few travel budget calculators that assist with estimating the costs. it looks like budgetting for around $70US a day for two is the way to go and then include the bigger things like Machu Picchu on top of that.
