It's a great city. I'm sure you'll have a great time. Brush up on some French if you can for added interest. Although people seem to speak both English and French just fine in Montreal.

Be sure to check out the Montreal guide. Some good recommendations from Montreal locals in there ;)

Montreal's a great city! My in-laws were here about a month and a half ago and they all seemed to have a great time. It's a little cold now (first snow today) but there's always something happening and there's plenty to do. I'm not sure what the cons would be, except that it'd be great if you could visit Quebec City, too--but 4 days is enough for Montreal itself.

Here's the Montreal tourist page, which will give you some idea of what's on. As Peter said, the Wiki Guide has lots of great ideas and info too. And if you'd like to know anything specific, just ask away!

We spent 4 days in Montreal and had a wonderful time. Definitely visit "Old Montreal" as it's steeped in history and also quite eclectic. Also, the hike up Mont-Royal is worth the view alone. The city itself has a lot to offer visitors including a great night life. The underground is very easy to use for getting around. I don't speak French but had no problem with language. Wait staff always spoke in English first. If my husband answered in French then they would continue in both languages.

We were there for a TP Meet-Up and Tway was our unofficial guide. Basically, we just followed her around like lost puppies until she gave in. As revenge, she took us hiking up the Mountain of Doom (said Mont-Royal).

amtrak from NYC, i did the trip the other way. Just a friendly warmnig the trip may take up to 12 hours depending on immigration and of course the one rail line which gives prioirty to freight trains. Took me 12 long hours, i would have taken the plane but it was too close to NYE for me to afford.

But yea, Montreal is a winderfull city and the metro can get u anywhere u want to go.:)
