Yes, long overdue, but finally implemented. We've added the possibility now to blacklist certain words so that if someone tries to publish a forum entry (this only applies to the forums!) with for example the word '_otsell' (first letter removed in order to avoid triggering the blacklist) in it, it won't work. The list is supposed to stay very very short and only target repeat spammers. In essence, this shouldn't bother anyone unless you happen to be trying to sell some shoes on our travel forum :)

If you come across words that can be added, please don't hesitate to PM one of us. PM'ing is probably best in this case so it's not immediately obvious from scanning forum entries. We will be very selective with what we add though because we don't want to run the risk of triggering errors on perfectly harmless posts!

Just fixing up a bug and testing this. It worked :)

Yay! I've been wanting this for so long. :) Should definitely cut out the repeat offenders.

Does triggering the list have consequences beyond the post not going through? (e.g. just a notification to you guys so you can review, or also block the poster (after two hits?) from posting anything else at all?)

Let's hope so! No consequences as of now. Just wanted to get the basic functionality out and see how it goes before tagging on extra bits and pieces.

I'm slightly afraid that without consequences you'll give them the freedom to experiment until they've found a workaround (e.g. start to be less consistent in their spamming), while an automatic block after two attempts - with nothing having gotten through - might be enough to frustrate them into giving up altogether.

Though I guess that's just too optimistic on my part... (given that they're always reported really swiftly, you'd have thought they'd have given up long since by now) :)

Phew! I thought at first it was one of those things where you couldn't post bad words. Like ass. Or poop. Or mikeyboab.

Hey, how did mikeyboab slip through the blacklist? Better go check up on that

Sander, if we see it happening, we'll probably implement some other fixes pretty quickly. There seem to be 2 or 3 particularly persistent buggers at the moment. There were also a lot with a specific Chinese website a few months ago, but I can't remember the exact url now, so that one might slip through again if tried.

e china cities (without the spaces). Yeah, thank Bela that the Olympics are over so that those have stopped spamming. (*frowns* Google still has 10 hits for forum threads with that word, even though they were all deleted months ago...)

Ah yes, so it was. Added to the list. Hmm, now that is a bit too slow for my liking by the big G. Probably should add 'noindex, follow' to those. Not a bad idea anyway really.

Okay, this is now done too. Even less incentive for spammers!
