Is it advisable to travel to HCM during their vietnamese festival - I am afraid shops will be closed.

eg Tet holiday - Vietnamese New Year.

Ariqe,
I was in HaNoi during Tet 06 and yes, basically everything shuts down for 3-5 days. Almost all VN people travel home to be with family over Tet, so the trains and buses are packed. This starts a few days before the official date and then you have the same situation on the last days of Tet as they return to where they work. Everything I wanted to see in HaNoi was closed, few restauarants open as well. I would avoid being in VN over Tet if sightseeing/shopping is your main goal.

I have plenty of Tet photos is my gallery. Good Luck to you.

Thanks ! wow. i hope is not the same for ho chi minh ...
tet starts on 26, 27 Jan. 25 is the eve.
so i was thinking 22-24 is like shopping time, and get to see the way they celebrate new year.

and then 25 onwards relax at a beach.

what do u reckon ?

Ariqe,
That sounds good. Shop and sightsee before Tet. I think you can count on HCMC doing the same as HaNoi. If all your staff have left for home and the main sights are closed, you have a very quiet period over Tet. I would head for Nha Trang if you want some beach time. Vung Tao is closer, but packed with VN families. Nui Ne is also closer, but I just don't think it is your best choice. NT has a very wide, nice beach, bay tours, plenty of choices on hotels/restaurants plus many other things to do. Take the overnight bus and you don't lose even one day due to travel.

Read my blog on NT if you are thinking of going there. I also will suggest DaLat if you prefer a cooler, greener, prettier option than another beach.

Ariqe,
Click on my user name, 'vegasmike6'. Then you will see my profile, below it says: 'Latest blog entry'. Click on the highlighted 'Day Tripping Koh Larn.' You then can read all my blog entries. Most are on VN. My photos from all countries are on the left side of my profile. Click VietNam for them. When you are on my profile, you have the option of sending me a 'Person Message' or PM. I will send you one now. When you get on Travellerspoint, it will say '1 new message' at the very top of the opening page. Click on that to read it.

The taxis and the buses are running, no problem. Hotels will be open, just have minimum staff. It is the stores and sightseeing that close over Tet. I talk about staying in HCMC in one of my blogs. Send me a PM if you have questions.

No worried mate,
Hotels, Travel agents are never closed on Tet. what you should be worry about are shops and restaurants (you may find more difficult to find wide range of food as usual, but The Sticky Rice Cakes are everywhere)
Happy travel:)
