Cancelling Phone Contracts

Travel Forums General Talk Cancelling Phone Contracts

My OH and I are off round the world in 4 weeks so wanted to cancel our mobile phone contracts.

Called them up and...........they won't let us! They said we would have to continue paying every month till our contract was up but they would let us drop it down to the lowest charge which is £15 a month. That means for the next 6 months I'll be paying £15 a month for a phone that is sitting switched off in my bedroom back in the UK!!!

When we asked about freezing the contract to re start it on our return we were told they couldn't offer us that option as we were in an 18 month contract and you could only freeze after the contract had finished. My OH pointed out that you're always in a contract because when your one runs out you get a new handset and it all starts again so no one would ever benefit from that

What has everyone else done in this situation? I'll be seriously annoyed if I have to pay £15 a month out of my living expenses for a phone back in the UK :(

Thanks

I was hurting for a phone or I wouldn't have signed the three year contract I did....but the best I could do was take it on the chin. they had a FOUR HUNDRED DOLLAR!!!! buyout clause, which came in under the cost of keeping the phone for three years. So I coughed up four hundred dollars...Which really sux.

I am sure you have a buyout clause...But it'll hurt, sorry to say...Now, in my market, they have "No Contract" phone contracts that are month to month...a bunch of new companies...but that's why all the old companies were putting in these painful buyout clauses in theirs....to keep their market share.

Sorry I couldn't offer you better news.

Thanks :)

The buyout was £160 so it works out cheaper if I just drop the tarrif down to £15 a month for the remaining 6 months :( I'll just have to keep it in ym head that every month I've spent £15 before I've even done anything

How about converting it to a pay as you go? Might be worth a try.

I've had a similar problem Babwoo.

Im going away for 4 months and im currently paying £35 a month for my phone contract which doesnt expire until next June!! So when I phoned to try and cancel I said 'Im having problems with my job and im not able to make the payments...what can you do for me! To which the woman said I can only drop it down 1 tariff per month, which works out at £5 less per month! Bloody joke! I leave end of Nov and have only been able to drop one tariff before I go away!

In short mate, I really dont think there is anything else we can do. These contracts really do have you over a barrell!

Enjoy your trip though buddy,

Jamie.

J-me484 you really should argue with them because they've dropped my £35 down to £15. If you say you'll just cancel your direct debit and leave T-Mobile they'll put you through the 'Retentions' and that's where they'll drop it lower.

That's the best I've got althought my OH is still bugging them to freeze it all together.
