I hired a bike and cycled for 2 days while in San Pedro and it was awesome.
Alot of cycle hiring is available in San Pedro and most will give you a map so you know where to go.
I cycled out to Valley of the Moon on my own and it was fantastic. But take a head torch with you if you have one when cycling back as it was pitch black apart from the light from the moon.Lots of people were cycling back and we were all pretty much racing back to San Pedro.

I would stop at La Serena for the night to break it up.I spent a couple of nights here. Its not a bad little place but not worth more than 1 night.Sorry i cannot remember where i stayed there.I think it was a hostel run by germans and it was in the south america lonely planet.

you really must go to la serena!!! it´s a wonderful town and the second oldest one in chile! if you need acommodation, -snip- it is really worth to visit la serena! there's a lot to see, like the lighthouse at the beach (which also is great for having a bath or for enjoying the sun), the recova market (art&craft), lots of churches and museums like for example the archaeological museum, where you can see an original Moai from the Easter Island. so go to la serena - it's really fun!
