im going to thailand next year to train in muay thai. on the way im stopping off in beijing for a week and then on the way back from thailand im stopping off in tokyo.... im 19 and im doing this by myself, pretty nervous lol. any advice for lone travelers??
My philosophy has been that fear always goes hand in hand with the unknown. To lessen your fear, get to know the place - watch videos, listen to stories, any safety precautions etc. so that you know a bit about the country and don't totally get shocked when you go there.
However, you won't REALLY know until you are there, and that's part of the excitement! Learn to embrace it because it's a kind of thrill that is awesome if you have a positive mindset. So yeah, either acquire more knowledge and/or accept the fact that you are in for a surprise and you won't know exactly what the future holds - but it will be an awesome ride!
I can't speak for the other places, but I think what you're doing in Thailand would be awesome. The locals there are very friendly and they will probably be fascinated that a Westerner is training mauy thai with them - you should make friends pretty quickly! I'm not quite sure where you're staying, but Thailand is a favourite place for many travellers so I'm sure you'll see some around.
Also remember that with long trips, if you're in a place and you don't really like it - don't worry cus there will be another new place to explore just around the corner. Of course this comes hand in hand with really loving a place and feeling sad to leave - which you'll probably experience more than the former!
I agree with Erik. You won't be alone for long in Thailand. There are hundreds of kids bumping around all over Thailand. You will meet up with some very quickly. Your fellow students in Muay Thai will also be a support group.
Have a great time.
cheers guys, im well excited for it! the place in thailand im going to is Phuket by the way.
