Greyhound: booking in advance or at the spot?

Travel Forums Australia / New Zealand & The Pacific Greyhound: booking in advance or at the spot?

Hey!

Two months from now I'm leaving Holland for a 6 month stay in Australia. During the first month I'm taking the Greyhound from Cairns to Melbourne, but I'm wondering how to get my ticket the cheapest. Is it any cheaper to book online in advance than to buy a ticket at the spot? The different online offers average out around 400 Aussie dollars, but I can't seem to find any info on prices of buying at the spot? Any experience with this?

Anyway, I only have 4 weeks for the east coast. Should this be enough?

Thanks a millie!

Sebastiaan

If you book online you'll get a 5% "netsaver" discount :)

Why don't you fly ? Jetstar will get you there in 4 hours and starts from $179 AUD one way ... if you want to see the coast 4 weeks ...mmmm yes you can do that but not a lot of time to stop and see everything. Isn;t the greyhound price for the no-transfer trip ?

No, $404 will get you the mini traveller pass, which allows you to get off as often as you want, just as long as you only go in one direction.

I do agree that a month is a rather short time to do the entire Cairns to Melbourne distance, though. Also, kiefern, do note that two months from now you're in early January, smack in the middle of the wet season. Cairns with have tropical rainstorms, and it'll remain unpleasant as far down as Brisbane (not as many rainstorms, but horrible humidity). Are you certain you can't rearrange your plans for Australia? A month would be a pretty decent time to see Brisbane to Melbourne, and then you could go see the stretch north of Brisbane a couple of months later, when it would be more pleasant...

I did Greyhound for a 6 week trip many years ago in Oz. Greyhound in the States is pretty poor/dirty, but in Oz it was quite acceptable. I enjoyed the trip. Back then the 30 day pass was really cheap - think I paid $99. It was off season - Sept-Nov and only booked in advance when in a small town with only limited service. I went from Cairns to Perth, and back to Adelaide (where I flew on to Sydney and Auckland).
