We are looking to stay outside DC and take a train in. Like maybe someplace in Maryland, Pa, Delaware, or Va where we can stay in a motel and then get a train into DC.

Any ideas????

We did this strategy.
Stayed in Falls Church, VA and took the convenient light rail transit right into DC.
Our accomodations happened to offer a free shuttle to the train so inquire when making resevations.

If you want to stay way out of town, stay down in a quaint town called Charlottesville. This is where the University of Virginia is located, and Thomas Jefferson's home (Monticello) is located on the south side of town--and is a national heritage site.

There is an Amtrak train that goes directly to the Union Station in Washington, D.C. from here--and the station is just a block from two major hotels--and the main part of town is just another block away. I think it's about an hour by train to Washington, D.C.--but the train only runs once a day, I think.
