My boyfriend and I are in China teaching English at the moment and will be travelling around Asia in January. We plan to go to Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand and Laos. We have been looking up volunteering opportunities on the net, but they all cost so much! We'd do any kind of work from conservation, construction, development and teaching. We would like to find placements that last any amount of time, from 2 weeks to 4 months, we're very flexible with how long we spend in each place!

Ideally we'd like either a placement for no fee or a very small fee with food and accomodation provided for. Or even better - one we get paid for... One quite good website we've found is If you know of any other organisations or websites we'd be very grateful!

Thank you

So what youre saying is you want a cheap holiday with no commitment to the place you're hoping to stay at.
the reason they want money and lond term volunteers is that they are poor, needy etc and problems are not solved by a couple of unskilled people "dropping in" for a few wekks and then hopping off again.

This thread has some info on it that might be helpful (although it's not specifically about volunteering in Asia), but there is a link half way down the page to another thread about volunteering in Cambodia.

There's an organisation helping children with their education accepts volunteers and requires no fees. However, it's in Cambodia, which is not on your list of places to go. Check out this thread if you're interested in going there to volunteer.

Cambodia: Volunteers please to help children - no fees

The link Hien posted is the one I was referring to as well, it sounds like a really good opportunity.

Hello wildfk, I think you have totally miss understood! We do not want a cheap holiday! We want to work with local communities and help smaller charities. I was just wondering if there were any organisations that do not charge us extortionate amounts! I have found many organisations on the net that charge you from 1000 dollars for less than a months work, this kind of money is too much for us. We would be happy to pay a little. And we are not at all unskilled workers just "dropping in", we have skills to offer. Instead of paying a large international company lots of money, we want to find out if anyone knew of smaller charities that will help us find a place to stay and we will work for them, so we would be willing to pay for our accomodation! And seeing as we want to work, we are not at all looking for a "holiday"!

Thank you, Katy Jones
