Hello all,
I'm a US student at the University of St Andrews in Scotland for a year-long postgraduate degree. We have a long break between 19 January and 8 February, during which I'd like to travel. I've been to Europe several times before, and covered the major sites in Western and Central Europe pretty well.
I figure that by the end of January I'll be ready for a break from the Scottish winter. I was thinking someplace in the Mediterranean might be a good destination. Places like Turkey, Cyprus, Rhodes, Malta or Sardinia look appealing to me. I just don't know how good they are as tourist destinations during the winter, and whether one should spend the whole 20 days in any. The islands especially worry me, as travel from there to another location would be rather pricy. I'm not much of a partier, more of a history buff/sightseer type, though I do enjoy a good pub.
Anyway, that was just some preliminary thinking. As you can see, I'm far from decided and open to anything, really. I am writing to elicit any suggestions you might have on a good place (or places) to visit during that time period that roughly fulfill my requirements (ie, warmer than Scotland and interesting!). And, though I don't have a specific budget, I'm a student, so my funds are rather limited!
