This site might help:

Where are you coming from? There are cheap flights from KL and Penang which is a lot quicker and easier if you want to go to Bangkok.

From Butterworth railway station U can few cheap hotel near to railway station. U just take a bus or cab, tell the driver U want to stop near butterworth police station less than 10 minute from railway station. Oppersite police main enterance there are few hotels but over there it like a dead town during at night. If U decide to take a bus, U can ask people where is new bus station. It's about +- 5 minute walking from railway station. My suggestion if U reach Butterworth evening, why don't U just cross to Penang Island by ferry. The fare is MYR1.60. The journey to Penang Island is about 30 minute. Walk about 5 minute U can see bus station. U can take bus and ask to drop U at Komtar. U can found a lot of cheap hotels and U can enjoy ur evening and night time. U can take ferry early in the morning ( the first ferry leave penang island at 5:50 am and U no need to pay anything when leaving Penang Island. The are many buses from Penang Island Jetty to town area and from town area to Jetty.

Just 9 days ago I used a hotel in Butterworth. I had an early morning train and didn't want to venture too far from the train station. I stayed in the PP Hotel. When you leave he train station - if you could just walk directly straight down the road - but you can't because of round-abouts - it would be up the road about 5 minutes by taxi on the right side. Car dealership on the left, bank on the corner, pass Seven Eleven store, Malay Restaurant - will be a right turn. See sign PP Hotel sign, think it was yellow and red, turn down that street.

Cheapest room was 50 ringgits (probably cheaper for locals.) Some rooms have a sign that lights up the room. Water was hot, A/C worked, toilet flimsy - okay clean for Asia. Night Manager was helpful: Malay restaurant not far from hotel was open all night.

Many years ago when I was staying in Penang (right next to Butterworth) I used the Hotel Continental 5 Penang Road and the Waldorf Hotel 13 Leith Street. They were in an area that had more to do in the evening and a little more interesting than the area around the PP Hotel. These two hotels in Penang were more used to tourists than the PP Hotel.

Good luck.
