Looking to study abroad in England where should I stay?

Hello folks, I have many questions but the first one is in regards to lodging while I am there. I was looking at housing options and decided it would be cheapest to find a room to rent out while I am there. I should be in England for about two and a half months over the summer. Is there anything preventing me from renting a room from somebody? I only ask because it seems that everyone recommends hostels though finding a decent room seems to be cheaper. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you kindly. And if it helps I am coming from the United States.

I shouldn't think it will be a problem at all! Plenty of people come and rent for short periods. I suggest you could look at Gumtree which is a local listing for all sorts of things but good for house shares and stuff like that!

Mim is correct, but there is alot of scams going on in Gumtree, be weary! You dont wana get ripped off for a few months rent to people that are showing you round a place they dont even own.

I suggest you figure out where you will be studying first--then let us know where that is and we can help you with a section to rent in.

There's a big difference in attending University College, London (north central London) versus attending Cambridge (two hours away by train) or Oxford (one hour away by train) or Imperial College (down on the west side near Harrods and the Kensington Street shopping district).

Thanks for the replies. As far as my studying goes I should have been more specific. I will actually be taking online classes from my school in the States which allows me the opportunity to travel. So it is more of a self imposed study abroad program. I am currently studying business management and I really just want to get a feel for what it is like in another country. I am pretty sure though that I would like to stay in the zone 1 or 2 area as I want to be close to the city center to allow for some easy train trips and a better feel of the bustling city. Any suggestions for areas would be great though as I have heard some stories about different areas though I am not sure what to make of most of it. Thanks again for the help.
